Very handy little tool if you do any kind of electrical work around the home. Tested it out on live and off sockets and works perfectly. Don't have to plug into the socket to test, just need to be close to it and the alarm will sound with a light-up LED to indicate the socket is live. Tried it on a turned off power strip and the tester doesn't light up or do anything. Turned on the same power strip and the tool started to beep and light up when I brought the tool close to a socket on the power strip when it's live. Buy this if you can catch it on sale. A very handy and necessary tool if you do any kind of electrical work indoors. Electricity can be a fatal mistake if you don't have the right knowledge and equipped with the right tools. Also great that it comes with AAA batteries already included in the package. The battery cover on the end is a bit tricky to open and close and is also the power switch of the device. Thus, it may take some finagling to get it to open. Thankfully, the package does come with some very good instructions and illustrations. Recommended buy!
