We bought this to work with the tofu litter as the holes make it easier to scoop up the cat's waste out of the box. I have a heavy-duty stainless steel scoop, too as the plastic ones weren't standing up to use with regular litter. However the holes are too small for use with tofu litter so we are happy to have found and purchased this large hole design.
