There must be lots of confusion for anyone that doesn't have any engineering or machinery background when you see the Terms and Number that is listed on all the fasteners, but don't worry, this guild will cover all the basic knowledge to help you to understand what are those codes and terminology means. We hope this will help you to be more clear on choosing the right screws you need to best suit your job.
All-Purpose Screw |
Drywall Screws |
Drywall screws are specifically designed to hang drywall on wood or steel framing. They have a sharp self-tapping tip and a bugle-shaped head, which allow for a quick installation without punching through the drywall paper cover.
There are two main categories of drywall screws: fine thread and coarse thread
Fine thread screws are used to hang drywall on light-gauge steel framing. For steel frames heavier than 2-gauge, a self-drilling Tek tip is necessary.
Coarse thread screws are used to hang drywall on wood framings.
Deck Screws |
In Canada, a majority of outdoor projects call for wood that has been pressure-treated with ACQ(alkaline copper quaternary). Because ACQ is a highly corrosive product, it is very improtant that the fasteners used with it be rust proof. Living.ca carries two kinds of Screws that are ACQ-approved.
Stainless Steel Screws
Stainless steel offers the best resistance to corrosion. However, stainless steel screws are more fragile than regular wood screws, and it is therefore recommended to use them with care.
Ceramic-coated screws
Colored to complement the most common wood colors (natural brown or ACQ's green tinge), ceramic-coated screws combine great performance and affordability
While a pan head may be required in certain instances, most decking screws feature a flat bugle head that will allow them to rest evenly with the wood surface. A decking screw's coarse thread ensures a strong hold in the wood.
If you have the difficulty to determine how many screws you should order to build your deck, you can refer to the chart below to get a rough idea.
Flooring Screws |
Living.ca offers two lines of flooring screws
Coarse thread flooring screw
A coarse thread will allow for a faster penetration of the screw and a stronger holding power.
High-Low thread flooring screw
The double thread helps split wood fibres, which in turn reduces wood splitting.
Both types of flooring screw feature a flat bugle head that will allow them to rest evenly with the wood surface.
