Metal base and tray, smooth rotation, holds a heavy 15.5" laptop without problems, and looks good on my desk. The arms holding the tray don't feel like metal, but they seem quite sturdy. Everything is held together with hex screws, meaning it's fixable should anything break. At the price I paid, this was a great deal (much better than Amazon)!
