The design is intentional: as you write, the metal alloy nib gradually wears down and extends, so each of the 6 replacement nibs lasts a long time before swapping—no sharpening or ink refills needed. The slim eraser stores safely inside the barrel and tips out only as much as you need, reducing waste versus a fully exposed eraser. Since there's no wood, lead, or ink cartridge involved, it actually produces less waste over its lifespan than traditional pencils.
